What is an Energy Template?

The heart of my art is about distilling down to essentials - of taking vast amounts of information and reducing that down to simple, pure fundamentals.  What I am left with is an essential expression of - a record of - the present moment.  An expression of the fundamental form that underlies the present moment. This is the template upon which the reality of the moment is formed.

For me, this template is understood in terms of Sacred Geometry and is expressed as a circle.  This is further explained here.

In simple terms I am painting a poem.  Though it is perhaps more akin to painting a prayer.  Crazy? Sure!  Let's take a look at an example!

This is the St Ives Bay Gratitude Ball.

I painted it one freezing cold February morning in the enormous dunes that stretch for miles along St Ives Bay in Cornwall.  It was a stunning day with brilliant light and great waves rolling onto an eternal stretch of beach below me.

That is one aspect of the energy of the moment: distilling down the weather, the location, the cold sand, the brightness, the icy wind.

But there was also my excitement.  My sheer joy of being out there.  The struggle against the wind, the battle against the cold, which was bracing and enlivening.  That too must be expressed, however subtly.

And then there was the artist, the human being, his life.  We found a discount caravan to stay in - me, Rebecca and our son Sam.  It was February and the huge caravan site on the Cornish coast was empty apart from us.  There was space and silence.  We had escaped our cramped battling life.  We felt hugely liberated and free and delighted to be on that coast and explore. Around lunch time Sam and Rebecca climbed the mighty dune and brought me lunch, filmed me and spent the afternoon sliding down the dunes!

That amazing liberation and joy - also entered the picture.  It is held in the picture. All this is contained in the picture, in the structure.

It is
encoded into the picture using 4.4 decades plus of practice.

I code into an abstracted form based around the sine wave and Fibonacci spiral, both of which are extensions of the Golden Ratio.  This ratio, called Phi, has been described as the Fingerprint of God.

I've been encoding into this form for decades, ever since I realised that music, when viewed visually, operates on a similar coding system - taking emotion and translating into geometrical forms based around Phi.

This is largely incomprehensible to most people.  However, so is computer coding, but nobody particularly cares, so long as the application works!  As far as I am concerned this is the same for my methods.  I have found a way of encoding experience into shape and colour, in such a way that the final picture radiates those energies back out.

In this sense, the Gratitude Ball (or any of the other balls), is an informational matrix - a storage system based upon Phi, that holds mood, weather, experience, time.  A vast amount of information condensed down into seed form.  The pictures are a way of storing love in such a way that it will radiate out eternally.

My intent is that the picture above holds the experience of a battered artist who has arrived with radiant joy upon the St Ives coast to spend a day of complete renewal amidst the purity and exquisite wonder of the Cornish Coast.
